FAQs - booking Northern Ireland flights

  • I’m searching for flights to Northern Ireland from San Francisco. Which airports do I choose?

If you want the most hassle-free trip, you should choose an airport with flights operated by British Airways with a layover in London Heathrow. From London, you can catch a flight without changing airlines to Belfast City Airport. From San Francisco, your options are flying from the San Francisco International Airport (SFO), which is 13 min from the city center, or from the San Jose International Airport (SJC), which is less busy but is a 46 min drive from downtown San Francisco. Both airports have flights operated by British Airways to London Heathrow. If you prefer a calmer airport in San Francisco that’s also closer to the city, look for flights departing from Oakland International Airport (OAK), which is 24 min from downtown. Norwegian operates nonstop flights to London Gatwick (LGW), from which point you can catch a low-cost flight to Belfast International Airport on easyJet.

  • Which airport in Northern Ireland is closest to Titanic Belfast?

Belfast City Airport is the closest to Titanic Belfast (10 min). However, if you’re on a flight to Northern Ireland on a low-cost airline, you’ll most likely land at the Belfast International Airport, which is a 25 min drive from Titanic Belfast.

  • What is the best airport in Belfast to stay close to the city center?

Belfast City Airport is the closest airport to the city center (13 min). Keep in mind that this airport is only served by flights from elsewhere in the United Kingdom and Europe, so you’ll always have to account for a layover when flying here.

  • I’m traveling to Londonderry. What’s the best airport for a layover?

Londonderry is served by the City of Derry Airport (LDY), which receives regular flights operated by Ryanair and Loganair from London Stansted (STN), Manchester, Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Liverpool. The airports of Manchester, Edinburgh, and Glasgow are the only ones that receive flights from the United States from various cities. If you want an airport with the most options of airlines and destinations, then choose Manchester International Airport (MAN). A hub for Thomas Cook Airlines and Virgin Atlantic, this airport receives regular flights from Philadelphia, Houston, New York, Atlanta, Las Vegas, and Orlando.

Top tips for finding cheap flights to Northern Ireland

  • Enter your preferred departure airport and travel dates into the search form above to unlock the latest Northern Ireland flight deals.
  • Northern Ireland is served by three airports: two in Belfast, the capital city, and one in Londonderry, about 1h 30m from Belfast. Keep in mind that nonstop flights to Northern Ireland from the United States are usually seasonal, so you’ll have to account for at least one layover in another city in the United Kingdom or elsewhere in Europe.
  • The Belfast International Airport (BFS) is the one with the most airlines and routes to choose from, but keep in mind that most flights are operated by low-cost airlines flying in from other European cities. When searching KAYAK for a flight to Northern Ireland landing at BFS, you will need to choose flights with multiple airlines.
  • If you prefer to have a layover at an airport served mostly by major airlines, the George Best Belfast City Airport (BHD) has regular flights to Northern Ireland operated by KLM from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS) and by British Airways from London Heathrow (LHR).
  • If you prefer a trip without layovers and are flexible about which airports to use in the United States, then look for nonstop flights to Northern Ireland operated by Thomas Cook Airlines. They have seasonal flights to Belfast International Airport from Las Vegas and Orlando (MCO), in partnership with Virgin Atlantic.
  • US citizens don’t need a tourist visa to enter Northern Ireland if they’re not staying for more than three months, but keep in mind that you need a passport that is valid for at least six months after your date of arrival in the country.

The walk from baggage claim to the taxi is very difficult for older people I will never fly into JFK again. It is physically challenging

Overall fine but both ways for this trip was delayed.

Flight was delayed by almost 5 hours. Suitcase was not loaded despite the flight being near empty (my colleagues’ suitcases did reach JFK, unlike mine). Had to argue on phone to get JetBlue to deliver the case to my hotel. Never again

The flight was excellent. The crew was welcoming and attentive.

Great! I love Jet Blue. My favorite airline! Very efficient, clean and timely.

Run out of snack choices. Why are the seats not padded for your butt? Are we sitting on blocks of wood or metal for $250-300 a pop? This ain’t spirit. Let’s get it together people

We were told that our flight would be delayed for 90+ minutes because of weather, so we went to get something to eat only to have them randomly start boarding 15 minutes after the announcement, with no warning.

Entertainment... No earphones passed out. Many including me couldn't use the TV. Legroom was good. Crew was indifferent and a bit surly. Free wifi was a nice convenience. Check in desk location was unknown. Gate number on the boarding passes was wrong.

Going through JFK’s security is a mess. The TSA security said no shoes on the bins. So, we place our shoes in the belt and they came out all over the belt. Boarding was delayed and Flight as well.

Safe and on time were the positives. The plane wasn't cleaned before boarding, there was garbage and food on the floor and in the seat pocket. The TV screen was small and the picture fuzzy, audio quality was poor. Seatbelt was fraying and seat did not recline properly. No charging ports near the seats,

My window shade didn’t work. So I missed coming into my city. ☹️

Flight was delayed in the gate by 5 hours and ultimately cancelled- rebooking service by United agents was terrible

Everything was pretty good except for food. They need to improve on it compared to other airlines.

Flight was delayed due to the late arrival of the catering truck, which is quite unacceptable. There was a beverage service, but no pretzel, or cookie, or nuts were served in coach.

Not worth the premium paid for the first class ticket

Not worth the price of premium class ticket paid, felt more like steerage.

Flighty delayed on boarding - then group 1 had to check their carry on bags but groups 3 and beyond could carry bags on - very inconvenient for weekend business trip with no checked baggage. Then delayed on the runway - before take off. No communication from pilot on why or how long. Wifi/Entertainment didn't work for 4+ flight. Upon arrival, attendants announced wrong carousel for baggage claim - everyone was waiting at the wrong place for their checked bags. This was a mess united!

I flew Delta last week and United Airlines is a poor substitute mechanical problems with the plane and shitty food among other things made my travel experience what’s become to be expected from United no way is it ever worth the money they make us pay

I had a great flight. Everything went smoothly and the flight arrived early.

Well....let's start from the point that I had to stay in airport for 12 hours instead of 2 that was scheduled. Poor company and even worst customer service. Never again....

Internet service was erratic. Crew service was poor and slow. My luggage on this non-stop flight was lost and not recovered

Missed this flight due to the first AA flight delay

Missed connection from Philadelphia to London because flight from DC was seriously delayed. Was re-routed the next day (had to pay for hotel) to Zurich and was given a main cabin middle seat while I had paid for premium. Great job AA!!!

Original flight delayed several times and finally canceled at 2:30 in the morning. Staff at the gate was not very helpful in resolving problems or communicating why there were delays. I spent 34 hours at the airport before I could leave, they couldn't book me on another early flight even after canceling my original flight. Next flight available after my original flight was canceled was 22 hours later. I will never fly American Airlines again.

very very tight seats unfriendly crew who do not seem to care about the comfort of their passengers and do not know how to smile poor ground staff support at LHR and PHX

So uncomfortable to sit in the tiny space on a long, international. Food was rough. Please, less white flour and processed food.

Our flight was delayed 2.5 hrs due to plane being too hot! After 1.5 hrs, airline decided to use another plane but had to wait for gate, baggage transfer & beverage transfer. Anyone could tell after first half hour that another plane was required and although did not affect us many would miss connecting flights at Heathrow. I have found the stewards are not the friendliest in the industry and the food is questionable, even as I like airplane food normally, the best of the 2 flights was the yogurt & granola for breakfast.

Terrible boarding , Business class seats are sub standard. As usual crew will miss your food too

Just get Economy Plus for international flights, so worth it the extra room, bigger seats…

The return trip was a customer service disaster. American Airlines needs an overhaul of how they treat their customers.

Flight was good and clean but delayed over an hour on the return flight.

The non stop flight and able to go into Atlantic City airport. They could lower the prices. It starts out low but then if you want to bring luggage and pick your seat the price goes up quite a bit.

Flight got diwngraded last minute and left us stranded. I was told I’ll be given credit for my luggage and seat upgrades but haven’t got anything yet

We can’t predict circumstances like this ahead of time, but I give your staff a hats off for immediately giving us updated informations.

It was nice! There was a very unhappy child in front of us and the flight attendant did a great job calming the child. I was impressed.

The plane was not on time for boarding or departure or arrivals.

EVERYTHING WAS WONDERFUL HOSPITALITY THE HELP.THE SEATING FRIENDLY ALWAYS HAVE A GOOD RIDE NOT ONE BAD EXPERIENCE WITH THEM

This was the smoothest flight I have had in awhile. I was also offered an exit row seat for a great upgrade cost and was able to sleep almost thr whole flight due to comfort and a smooth flight. We left on time and arrived on time.

No food not even water offered unless you buy it and no usb in the seat but other than that everything was good

Because our flight from marsh Harbor to Fort Lauderdale was over three hours delayed it caused us to miss our flight in Fort Lauderdale. Because we missed that flight, it cost us nearly $100 apiece for four different travelers which totaled nearly $400. We are seeking a reimbursement for the flight that we missed in Fort Lauderdale Florida.

The agent at check-in was strident, unwelcoming, and condescending to customers ahead of me.

Flight was delay 9hrs and nothing was provided at airport, had to go and get a room to sleep in, paid for Uber back and fort with no offers until we landed back home a 1hr later for a $75 voucher for a future flight.

Didn't like anything..entire crew was very rude to everyone on the flight. Plane old and the trays fall down on you the while time you're flying. Charged more for a carry on bag than for the plane ticket itself. Did make it from point a to point b, but worth the extra money to fly with another airline

9 hours of delay!! Was not able to check my luggage that I paid for!!!

It was delayed 9 hours for operational reasons, despite the plane arriving to the airport on time.

I am very disappointed with Frontier Airlines. They cancelled our flight because they couldn't find a crew member, and then didn't get us to our connecting flight. We had to cancel our whole vacation. We were promised flight and hotel vouchers, but they never sent them.

9hrs delay and didn’t provided anything until after flight landed $75 voucher for fiuture travel no meals or anything.

It was ridiculously hard to check in for the flight, and Frontier charged us a LOT of money to have a carry on suitcase, and then told everyone we could not carry on bags and had to check them through at the gate, and didn't refund the extra money we paid to have the suitcase as carry on.

I had a terrible experience with Frontier. I arrived before the 60 minute cut off and was told that Frontier has a two hour window for bags. I was then told the next available flight wasn’t until the end of the day (I had booked a 6am flight). I took a look around and saw other people being told that they could not board their flights or that they had to pay additional fees. I opted to rebook on American Airlines. There’s absolutely no straightforward way to contact Frontier, so this ticket was a complete waste of money. Oh - and the kicker is that the lady lied about the two hour cut off.

Frontier won’t help you at the airport without paying $25. Carry on was $75. Then you get on the plain and every beverage or snack is also a charge. Seats are hard and real packed in. I would never fly them again.
